The Costs of Living: How Market Freedom Erodes
the Best Things in Life given by Dr. Barry Schwartz
Hodson Hall, Refreshments served at 4:30 PM.
It is a trusim in the U.S. and most of the developed world
that choice is good, and more choice is better. Like most
truisms, this one is false. Whereas some choice is essential
for well being, too much choice leads to paralysis, bad
decisions, and dissatisifaction with even good decisions.
This is especially true of people who are out to get the
"best" in every decision. The relation between choice and
well being turns out to be an inverted-U, and it is the task
of psychologists to find the "sweet spot"- an amount of
choice that contributes to autonomy and liberation but
avoids paralysis and dissatisfaction.
